Escape & Evasion and Orienteering (12 October 2017)
The escape and evasion exercise is paired with the orienteering drill to enable cadets the opportunity to learn the orienteering principles of topographic-map reading and using a compass. The reason orienteering and escape and evasion are combined into a single, fantastic opportunity for our cadets is to allow them to move from location to location using navigation tools while trying to evade capture by Army National Guard troops.
The event is held at Camp Ashland (Army National Guard), Nebraska, in April. It is an excellent team- and confidence-building exercise that cadets look forward to at the start of each school year. The Nebraska Army National Guard and Offutt AFB SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) instructors provide the training and act as enemy forces attempting to capture cadets who must use every means possible to remain undetected, as they move from point to point throughout the wooded area of Camp Ashland.
